Miriam’s research interests lie in the social and cultural history of the Soviet Union, with a current project focussing on evangelical Christians in the period 1945-1991. This study connects with the work of the Centre for Peace History in two ways. First, she is interested in ideas about the end of the world and how these were articulated in the cold war period, both in the realm of official culture and within evangelical communities. Second, she is interested in the relationship between religion and pacifism in this period of Soviet history, in terms of both the state-sponsored peace movements (in which religious leaders participated) and in the individual stories of young men who refused military conscription on the basis of their religious convictions.
