Yorkshire Studies African Network

African studies in Yorkshire has a proud tradition and a vibrant present. Africanists in Yorkshire's universities are carrying out an exciting range of world-class research in a wide range of disciplines. However, there is currently little coordination between these activities and no place to share ideas and activities and develop research agendas. The proposed Yorkshire African Studies Network (YASN) aims to address this gap. The Network will provide a base for the exchange of ideas and experiences, the organisation of seminars and conferences, and potentially provide the basis of funding bids.

Several events organised by YASN this year are peace related and you can download the event schedule below:

Workshop:

The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda: History in the Present and the Politicisation of Intellectuals

Conference:

South Sudan and after: rethinking borders and revisiting migration after the referendum

Outside the Law: Stories from Guantanamo

The Centre for Peace History is happy to launch its partnership with Sheffield's Showroom Workstation on 15 December 2010 with a screening of Outside the Law: Stories from Guantanamo. The film is directed by Polly Nash and Andy Worthington and tells the of Guantanamo with a particular focus on how the Bush administration turned its back on domestic and international laws, how prisoners were rounded up in Afghanistan and Pakistan without screening, and why some of these men may have been in Afghanistan or Pakistan for reasons unconnected with militancy or terrorism.

The film focuses on the stories of three particular prisoners; Shaker Aamer (who is still held), Binyam Mohamed (released in Feb 09) and Omar Deghayes.

Director Andy Worthington and former Guantanamo detainee Omar Deghayes will be on hand for discussion following the film.

This is the first in an ongoing series of peace and justice-themed films coordinated in partnership with Showroom Workstation. Stay tuned for more information about a film series and public discussion on immigration, coming in March.
