‘Sisters of the Olive Leaf: Women and the British Peace Movement at Mid-Century’
The conference offers the opportunity to examine narratives of peace and the ways in which they were deployed in the period leading up to the First World War. It will pay attention to the development of peace movements and the literary and cultural representation of peace, looking at the ways in which ideas of peace in the nineteenth century fed into anti-war movements and narratives in the early twentieth.
It will discuss the ways in which representations of peace and war interact with the political, economic, cultural and religious contexts from which they arise and in which they intervene.
